Bracket Notes

Illinois is the last team in the field as of today, due mainly to their 4 top 50 RPI wins (2 top 25), and their 9-5 conference record.  It’s highly unlikely that the committee would leave Illinois out if they get to 11 wins in the Big 10 this year.  Illinois is an 11 seed ahead of UConn and Marquette in order to conform to bracketing rules.

After lingering just outside the bracket for a couple of weeks, San Diego St makes it in today.  A road win against BYU this week would be an impressive resume builder for the Aztecs.  If they lose that one, they may need to win the Moutain West tournament to make the field.

Dayton’s loss to Duquesne makes the Flyers the first team out this week.  With road games left against Temple and Richmond, Dayton may need an impressive conference tournament run to make the field this year.

The Big East bubble situation continues to be fluid.  At this time, the order of the teams is this: Louisville/Marquette/Connecticut/Seton Hall/South Florida/Cincinnati/St Johns/Notre Dame.  Look for UConn to get special consideration by the committee this year, given their big wins (Texas, Villanova) and the fact that Coach Jim Calhoun was absent during a 3-4 stretch.  All the teams outside of the field at the moment must get at least to .500 in conference play to ultimately make the Big Dance.
